A Magnificent Beast

I took this photo at Chester Zoo recently. What a handsome looking creature it is. The only way to 'shoot' lions is with a camera, in my view. Sadly not everyone feels the same way. I'm sure we all remember the story in the news about the American dentist who shot a lion in Zimbabwe and sparked a huge outcry and international disgust. I can't understand what makes these trophy hunters tick. I mean, how can it be sport to arm yourself with a rifle and kill a creature that hasn't done you any harm? Every now and again someone posts a picture on Facebook of some smiling man or woman (sometimes even kids) standing proudly over the corpse of a wild animal they've killed and it makes me sick to the stomach. I know some would say that it's no worse than killing animals for food, but in my view it is totally different, because you're calling it 'sport' and it's anything but sporting, surely. If people are so contemptuous towards animal life, I shudder to think how they treat humans.

I agree that the only way to shoot is using your camera.. Great picture there.. He seems very pensive.

I so agree with you. It gives me chills and makes me go UGH, trophy hunting does.

I agree - I have absolutely no problem with anyone killing for food, but just for fun - no. Beautiful photo.

@5thHouse definitely a very good message , it should reach to number of people. Though there are stringent laws againt killing of any such animal still I feel many innocent creature lose their lives.

The lion is called king after all. Shooting wild animals is very much prohibited isn't it?

Not too close but luckily my camera has a good zoom and I was able to zoom through the bars of the cage to get this shot
