Opportunites Not Taken As A Child

When I was a girl my parents decided it would be nice if I learned how to play the piano. As for me, at that time in my life I wasn't going to have it. I didn't want to have to spend time sitting there practicing every day. I wanted to be outside with the rest of the kids in the neighborhood playing softball or what the game whatever the game for the day was.
Looking back at it all now that I am older, I sure wish I had been more involved in my lessons and practicing. Now I wish I could play the piano.
Do you have something that you were learning or could have learned while you were growing up that you avoided? It's not that you can't learn now, it is just easier I believe, when you are a child.
I sure wish I had taken that opportunity when I was a child.

My view is that it is never too late to learn - So I don't dwell in a negative way that "I wish I had done something", instead, I go and do it! Why not learn to play the piano? You are never too old to learn something new. . . Granted, you may never be a concert pianist - But, if you have the desire and will, go for it and do something positive.
I have no regrets about not doing something, a regret is a reason to go and do it!

What's stopping you from learning now?

@HazySue I think that's great. I was 52 when I published my first novel. Never too late!

@irishidid not a thing. I am taking piano lessons, it is just harder to learn as an adult. It came so easy to me when I was a child.

I did take piano lessons for years from a little old lady who only charged 25 cents a lesson. Now it's been years since I played regularly. I tried not long ago and for the life of me I can not remember any of the notes for the left hand at all!

@HazySue 25 cents wasn't the norm even when I was a child, but this sweet little old lady just loved giving the lessons so refused to charge any more than that, Most even back then wanted at least $10 an hour. Plus, she ended up using those quarters to buy us gifts for our birthday and Christmas each year.

Yes, I regret that I wouldn't sit still and learn how to sew, knit or crochet from my grandma.

@Tampa_girl7 there are so many things I could have learned if only I could have sat still.

I took piano lessons in the fourth grade, and like you, I wanted to quit. My parents let me, but I wish now they had made me continue. It really is easier to learn something as a child.
My husband had always wanted to play the guitar and at about the age of 64, he started taking lessons from our son-in-law. Now he can play (I'm so proud of him), but sees how much harder it is to learn as an adult.

@HazySue There's a song that he plays and sings to me that is the most special thing in the world! My first reaction to new things used to be "no." Now I try to ask myself first, "why not?"

@1creekgirl it is easier to learn as a child. I think it's wonderful that your husband is learning how to play the guitar.

My father was in the music business - publisher and distributor of sheet music for instruments and choirs. We were obligated (we had no choice) to take piano lessons at least for one year. If we didn't like it after one year we could quit, which I did. And to this day I regret it. I really wish I hadn't quit and have always wanted a keyboard of some size in our home for my kids to play. But they are athletes and probably wouldn't have taken it up anyway. But I remember playing "O Canada", "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "The Theme Song to Romeo & Juliet".

I wish that I exercised more when I was a kid. I now like to exercise.

@JESSY3236 it's great that you like to exercise as an adult, many adults look at it as a chore.
