And here we are at #9 in my Favorite Protest Songs series (why? Because I love protest songs.) The #9 slot belongs to the legendary Black Sabbath, and their classic "War Pigs." Led by guitarist Tony Iommi (the band's only constant,) Black Sabbath formed in Birmingham, England in 1968. (Classic lineup: Iommi, vocalist Ozzy Osborne, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward.) They are a pioneer of heavy metal, two-time Grammy winner's, and are in both the UK Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. From their classic 1970 album, Paranoid, "War Pigs" is a topnotch protest song. It was released as a single, but I find no evidence of it ever charting in any country. And yet it's one of Black Sabbath's most popular songs. Interestingly, while perusing Wikipedia, I learned that writer Geezer Butler claims it's a song about evil in general, and later said it was against the Vietnam War. Ozzy, on the other hand, said the band new nothing of the war and that it was just a "war song." Whatever their intentions, they sure churned out a classic protest tune!

My aunt gave me one of their albums when she went off to college. That's how I got into them.

The question becomes, though, does Ozzy even know he was in Black Sabbath? (Seriously for a moment, I do feel sorry for him.)
