Joel Sherman reports the news on Thursday New York Mets left handed starting pitcher Steven Matz who has not pitched in a regular season game since August 14 due to soreness in his left shoulder will not make his next scheduled start on Friday September 23, 2016 when the Mets host the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field in New York City. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson does not believe that Matz will be able to make any more starting pitching assignments for the remainder of the 2016 Major League Baseball season have ten games left on the regular season schedule. The Mets (80-72) are in contention to qualify to make the playoffs as a wild card entry. It remains a mystery if Matz will be part of the Mets starting pitching rotation during the playoffs if the Mets qualify to make it to the postseason. Gabriel Ynoa will replace Matz as the Mets starting pitcher on Friday.

If the Mets get past the Giants in the wild card game, the absence of Matz will hurt in a series against the Cubs.
