Question:
Is there a hell, and how important is it not to end up there?
Answer:
Yes, there definitely is a hell. Read what the Creator himself says about the terribleness of it;
Mat 5:29 If your right eye causes you to sin, poke it out and throw it away. It is better to lose one part of your body, than for your whole body to end up in hell.
So terrible it is - he says - that it is much better to poke out your own eye, if it causes you to sin, than to end up for a lifetime burning in the most intense flames

I once read that there was a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

@Bluedoll Jesus gets dragged without any reason. 
If people want to state their opinion it's fine but why drag God or Jesus or Bible? What did they do? Why drag them in unnecessarily?

The personal words of Jesus is our most reliable source on this. Hear what he said:-
Mar 13:31 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My Words shall not pass away.
The opinions are nice when it comes from people, but if they differ from Jesus himself they are not worth anything.

Um.... I am not giving up my eye. No way! I would rather improve than punish or hurt myself or others. Punishment / hurting others or oneself is sin too. Beside who are you and me to decide anyways?
After interacting with lots of religious people I have gotten the impression that the idea of heaven or hell depends on the person talking about it.
Basically no one has a clue what heaven or hell is! You didn't see it. I didn't see it.

When investigating about Heaven and Hell, we have no better source than the person who created them himself.
He knows everything about it, and he also wrote everything about it.
Knowing that we for now cannot see him, nor heaven or hell, he gave us clear information, black on white in the bible.
