Food For Thought....Pizza Delivery Drivers...Kindness and Laughs

My husband is a very hard working fella. He currently works 2 jobs due to my own illness which keeps me at home and out of work. I feel sorry for him as a delivery driver. While some people do express gratitude with tips or at least a friendly smile, not everyone is so kind. He is often left with no tip at all, therefore actually costing US as a family more money because we paid the gas for him to deliver that pizza...
My husband is a very positive guy...He came home a couple weeks ago and told me that a disabled little girl collected the pizza from him and paid him, but with the payment there was a note, thanking him for delivering her pizza and wishing him well. She tried to tip him from her piggy bank, he refused, and told her that her note meant more than all the money in the world....I thought that was amazing and thoughtful of the girl.
Thennnn.....He comes home a few nights ago and tells me about delivering to this group of teenage boys, highschool age. He says they always order and in the "Remarks" part of the label which would be used for delivery notations, these kids always request things such as a dinosaur being drawn on the box, or to speak in a British accent when delivering etc....And of course my husband plays along every time...and these kids get the greatest laugh out of it. They don't tip much, but he says as long as they laugh, and he gets a chuckle out of seeing them happy...it makes his job easier.
(Sorry that post was way longer then I expected)

I love your post. And your husband seems to be a wonderful man. What is your illness, dear?

Thanks so much @marguicha. He definitely is. He's the kinda guy that would give you the last of anything he had if he thought it would help or make a difference in your life. As far as my illness, I have a few things wrong with me at the moment physically, but the major issue is that I have 40% lung capacity at the moment, so we're trying to improve that. I also suffer from extreme anxiety and severe panic attacks when around many people and that in itself has created some pretty undesirable side affects that make even the most simple tasks hard for me. Too young to feel this boxed in, I know that much.

@ThatWifeyLife I´m SO sorry! Anxiety can be a very difficult ailment. But now it seems that there are ways to help with it.

@marguicha Yes it is very difficult, right now my main focus is trying to get my lung capacity back up, as breathing is a pretty important thing I hear lol. Makes having a panic attack or anxiety worse when you're already not working off of full lung function, plus the effects of reduced oxygen levels makes you tired all the time and you never feel well and thank you hun for your well wishes!

Hey, sometimes thy get a bit long. This is not overly long and it is an interesting story. I can't imagine how hard it must be to work two jobs like that. I am sorry for your illness and hope the tips get better. Does he get to keep all the tips or does the pizza take part?

Thank you for your kindness @JamesHxstatic. Oh its quite exhausting for him for sure, so I try to make everything else as comfortable for him as possible. You never know how the tips will pan out but, he does get to keep all of the tips he earns without giving up any portion.

He is, couldn't ask for a better mate to be honest. Thank you so much, I hope so as well...but as long as people are at least kind to him, because as well all know dealing with the public can be pretty overwhelming sometimes.

What a great story. He sounds like a great guy who is really down to earth and caring. It can be a thankless job but he seems to make the most of it. Being positive is a good trait to have.

Thank you L_B @Happy2BeMe. You're right, it is a thankless job, and most people take those drivers for granted, at one time I will say, I probably did too. He does do his best to keep his head up and make the most of bad situations because he hates having to be away from our family as much as he is, but does it for us at the same time.

Sadly most people dont really realize the minimum pay those drivers receive. At least for this particular large chain company. They are responsible for their own gas, they make not even half of minimum wage, the wear and tear on their vehicles, special insurance coverage since they use the car for work, so their tips often times just help pay back their gas. I wouldn't know all this if it weren't for him taking on this part time job myself. It's crazy.
