Can anyone explain me about mutual fund?

As I have been seeing advertisement of SBI mutual fund in every discussion I clicked.So I have some savings and planning to invest in some good investment plan, , which helps me to get high return. Do anyone know, how mutual funds work to give high return? About it's risk involvement and also other co-investment plan where I can earn more with same risk involved.

Mutual funds are a more conservative investment that individual stocks. It's what I mostly do these days since individual stocks can crash and burn in an instant.

I know stock yeild return on investment only when there is profit in the company and vice versa. But how mutual funds work?
