Acid jazz. A jazz subgenre in which anything goes, as long as it's groovy. #5 in my Favorite Acid Jazz Bands series is Chicago's Liquid Soul.
Led by saxophonist Mars Williams (who also plays for the Psychedelic Furs,) Liquid Soul formed in 1993. I found some interesting tidbits on Wikipedia: they were the first acid jazz band to play the Newport Jazz Festival. They also played at President Bill Clinton's Inaugural Parade, and Dennis Rodman's birthday party.
I saw Liquid Soul in Denver. It was the most energy I've ever seen a band put out onstage. By the end of the show, I was drenched.
"World's on a Leash" was just one reason. Taken from their 1996 self-titled album, the song is an exercise in jazz-funk, featuring the band's powerful horn section. Listen to this and tell me that you wouldn't be drenched as well.
