Is it respectful to follow someone back?

On many social sites when you follow someone, do you expect that person to follow you back? When you interact with someone, do you expect them to interact with you? Is that person following people just friendly or do they want to become popular? I personally reckon if a person wants to talk to you that you should pay the respect back.

@SIMPLYD that's a good way to see what that person is interested in and to see what you have in common. What would you be interested in reading?

Fair enough but you'll still read that person's posts

With follows i don't expect a give and take...that is based on personal interest. But interaction is a different thing...if someone tries to talk to me...it is only polite that i reply.

I don't follow everyone that follows me. I will check out their activity since joining and if I find that we have things in common or they talk about things that interest me then I will follow them. I'm not going to follow someone just because they followed me, if what they write doesn't interest me in the least. I do go to the discussions of the people I follow category first, I don't want to see a bunch of stuff that I have no interest in. After I have gone there I then go to recent activity of discussions. Is it respectful? I don't think I have a direct answer for that. I have people send friend requests to me on Facebook all the time, I almost never accept them. I have certain criteria that I follow on Facebook and I guess some of that carries over here. This of course is how i do it, others have a different way. I don't think its a right or wrong way, just how we each have determined what may work for us.

Yes we all just want to find the way that makes our posts to be seen.

I think I agree if people want to talk sure return the same. It is just my opinion though that these conventions, that is the ways that social sites function are really cumbersome.

At the end of the day people will like what they want, and reply to what they want.

i am not sure what are the expectations of mylotters. whether is it rude not to follow back. as for interaction, i refresh my screen, toggling between "most recent activity", "most recent discussion", " hot discussion" and respond or comment to those topics that I can relate to.. seldom use the "follow" button..

Everyone has their own way. I follow people for my posts to get noticed. I just think your posts will get noticed quicker if people know you exist on the site.

I have the same code, although sometimes I just don't seem to get around to it and I may notice it. I believe that Social Media should requires the same etiquette that you need to socialize in person. so long as you are conversing with people and giving them attention, we need to be aware of each others feelings.
