So Donald Trump has a dirty mouth and thinks he has dibs on the vagina of any pretty woman.(The woman involved might have a say over her own body. Just sayin') Is anyone really surprised? What I find interesting about this latest (*cough*cough) scandal is that the feeding frenzy media are indulging in. CNN devoted hours to coverage of this “event.” The viewer could almost hear them licking their chops with glee. Yeah, sharks, blood in the water. While the media were broadcasting over and over and over talk—bleeping out only one naughty word—the tragedy of perhaps 800 people losing their lives in Haiti because of Hurricane Matthew was all but ignored. The impact on the American South East Atlantic Coast, while hardly insignificant, was a bullet dodged next to Haiti. Any talk of relief services on the major new broadcasts? The story of the on-going opioid epidemic in this country gets ignored. According to the CDC(1), seventy Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. That does address the needs of those who are addicted, who miss work or are unable to work. It doesn’t address those who are incarcerated, who have had their children taken away from them. It’s just the number of those whose families (or the county) have to find a piece of ground to put them in. And I sure didn’t hear any talk of the recent rise in homelessness in this country, probably (I guess) helped along by the same drug epidemic. Not that there aren’t people working on these issues—and gods bless them all. I don’t think there’s a family untouched by drug addiction or alcoholism. It’s horrendous. It robs us of lives and resources we could use in, say, natural disasters or presidential elections. (1)
