TV Character Heard But Never Seen - The Mysterons – Captain Scarlet

The evil, vengeful Martian Mysterons had the best excuse of all for never being seen. They were invisible. We got to see people and machines they created facsimiles of after killing and destroying the originals but we never saw the actual ghostly Mysterons. We often saw the spectral twin-circle lights of a Mysteron observation devise, such as the lenses of all-seeing binoculars or some kind of sniper’s ray-gun rifle, but the Mysterons were as mysterious as it is possible to get. Their voice was heard, mostly during the film noir style opening sequence narrated by Ed (Captain Blue) Bishop. The Mysterons were voiced by Donald Grey. The voice introduced itself in every episode as ‘The voice of the Mysterons’ which seemed to be a collective hive voice rather than an individual spokesperson. Captain Black, the one Facsimile to regularly escape capture by Scarlet and Spectrum used the Voice, though the indestructible hero Captain Scarlet, even when briefly possessed by his own Mysteron in the pilot episode, managed to retain his own Cary Grant accent (voiced by Francis Matthews). The Voice actually ruined the Mysterons. It brazenly told Spectrum just what they planned to do in their next bid at taking over and destroying our World, taunting the heroes by claiming they couldn’t be stopped. If they’d just got on with their attack without broadcasting their terrorist intentions, their invisibility would have ensured their success. It’s a bit like a bank robber telling the police the time, location and date of his next intended heist and then wondering why the cops turned up to arrest him in mid-attempt. A literally unkillable agent leads an international intelligence agency's fight against an extra-terrestrial terror campaign.

I've never heard of it, but then again, I was a toddler at the time.

@teamfreak16 they are on youtube in a few cases and the closing theme tune is great with very thrilling comic book stills that are far more exciting than anything in the actual stories

I don't think I ever watched Captain Scarlet. I remember Thunderbirds though, particularly when it made a comeback in the 1990s because my daughter had a craze on it and I had to search everywhere to get a Tracy Island for Christmas.

Interesting. Never heard of this but it reminded me of the TV show Charlie's Angles where you hear the voice of Charlie but never see him.

@JohnRoberts yes, often hired for sounding just like Cary Grant who Captain Scarlet was modelled on
