No series about girls would be complete without #8 in my Favorite "Girl" Songs countdown, the classic "Oh Girl" by the Chi-Lites.
Chi-Lites formed in Chicago in 1959, and despite numerous lineup changes (Marshall Thompson is the only original member,) are still going strong. They are in the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and the R&B Music Hall of Fame.
1972's "Oh Girl" was the followup single to their classic hit "Have You Seen Her?" It's "Oh Girl" that is, according to Wikipedia, the Chi-Lites only #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The song sold over one million copies, earning Gold Record status.
"Oh Girl" has been covered numerous times, notably by Leo Sayer, Smokey Robinson, and Seal.
It's a classic pre-breakup ballad, one of the greatest R&B songs to emerge from the 70's.
