@FourWalls and I are both doing "Girl" themed series', and we have yet to match on any songs. So here goes: #7 in my Favorite "Girl" Songs countdown is DEVO's "Girl U Want."
Inspired by the Kent State shootings, DEVO formed in 1973. Their name stems from their philosophy that man is devolving rather than evolving. The band is best known for their hit song "Whip It."
(Fun Wikipedia Fact: Both Iggy Pop and David Bowie convinced Warner Brothers to sign DEVO.)
The quirky "Girl U Want" is from the band's 1980 album Freedom of Choice. I know it was released as a single, but find no evidence of chart action on either Wikipedia or All Music Guide ( take that as you will. They didn't show "Whip It," either.)
"Girl U Want" has been covered, notably, by Robert Palmer and Soundgarden.

I will always be partial to Soundgarden on this one. Always have to love the original though.

That was a great song, and the Freedom of Choice album was fantastic! They had another hit with the title track, too. I actually ended up with several DEVO albums. I never knew about the David Bowie/Iggy Pop connection with DEVO. I like the Robert Palmer version pretty well -
Robert Palmer Girl U Want. 1994 single charting at #57 in the UK in July 1994, and #118 in Australia. From the album 'Honey', this track is a cover version o...

Robert Palmer had exquisite taste when it came to covers. I got to see him at Red Rocks. Awesome!
