Should we prepare for hurricanes, earthquakes and floods? My experience.

Years ago an hurricane came very near where I was staying. I had gone to Disneyword (I finally stayed atthe resort, alone in Orlando and worried nad Disneyworld closed) and a nice niece who worked in Miami came the next day to take me back to Miami. I was staying at a 5 star resort. Beautiful as can be! But the place did not have any basement to hide if the hurricane hit. And noone came to help out, so I decided to help myself. I brought inside all the terrace tables and chairs. I checked the trees and thankfully there were none too close. I then discovered that the 2nd bathroom (with no window) was the best place to hide. I had bought food for the whole week. And while the TV told about how the hurricane got nearer, I cooked. I know that in those instances, electricity can fail. And so I cooked and cooked while I filled every pan that I wasn´t using with water. My niece came the next day and fortunatly hurricane Charlie missed the resort. But I decided then that we were much better prepared in my country for earth´s catastrophes. The trip back to Miami was awful. Half of the houses were destroyed in part. I´m sure that were are ways to build that are better even if they cost more. The highway was a mess. In 2010, there was a terrible earthquake in Chile. Many countries in the world offered help. Our President then said she´d make a list of what we needed. The country was not devastated as other countries are with lesser problems. We know how to deal with them. Do you think that there is a better way to deal with hurricanes and the like? Can you prepare better?

Of course there could be an earthquake anywhere and I am not sure how I would do. I'm sure this house wasn't built with one in mind. We tend to have blizzards instead of hurricanes and I am prepared for that. Not everyone here is, though. We haven't had a good blizzard for a few years and people forget or new arrivals never knew.

@marguicha You'd think people would think of things like that. I guess many of them have the "It can't happen to me" attitude, though.

I have gone to San Francisco and as anyone knows it is a place where there could be a BIG earthquake. Yet the houses are slender and I doubt very much that they will keep standing after a quake.

@peavey In my country we can´t say that about earthquakes. It is happening all the time.

I'm glad the hurricane missed the resort you were at. I would think there would be better housing construction in places that see so many hurricanes.

I am ashamed that there was no help in a 5 star resort

I go to resorts where they have awesome kitchens. BTW, the next day, I had a lovely talk with a Spanish speaking worker. He brought me coffee.
