Vijaya Dasami' is the festival celebrated throughout India on the 10th day of Dusserah. So this is a part of Dusserah festival. This is the festival on which the good has conquered the 'evil'. This is on this day that the people celebrate the victory of the Mother Goddess over Ravana , the king of Demons . This is according to one tradition.
Another theory is that it is celebrated by the people as the Mother Goddess has won the battle and successfully killed MAHISHASURA, a king of Demons.
According to some other theory Pandavas celebrate the Navratri festival (9 nights) festival worshiping the Diety, the Goddess Durga. On the 10 th day Arjun visits the TREE NAMED 'JAMMI' and offers prayers to her. Afterwards he takes out the weapon hidden on the upper branches of the sacred tree. Earlier the Pandavas hid their all weapons on this tree. Now for waging teh WAR MAHABHARATA they takes all their weapons down from the tree.
They fight with Kauravas and defeat them. Hence this is a victory for Pandavas.
HOW PEOPLE PERFORM THIS FESTIVAL
On this day people will display all their weapons at home. Here the people consider the tool associated with their respective work as their weapon. For students it is pen and a book, for a farmer it is the Tractor and other plowing implements, the bullocks, For a Computer Programmer or software engineer it is his Laptop or Desktop etc., They worship their tools offer flowers . In the evening all people visit a temple and walk around the tree 'JAMI' which will be there. Every temple will have this tree in its premises.
They seek the blessings of the tree . They bring some leaves along with them. After coming to their house they hand over some leaves to the elder members in the family and seek their blessings.

Splendid! I had been looking for a discussion with the details, as I am not up to writing much.
But didn't get the reference in the victory of the Mother Goddess over Ravana...
