Just had my "ASS" chewed royally

I truly can't believe the nerve of some people. This guy actually used the analogy "that it's easier to plant a bomb on a plane, than to get inside my gate." Really? I hope not!! We have policy and procedures in place to prevent anyone from entering into our secured facilities for a reason. He also had asked me if I knew so and so with the fleet managing dept, no sir I don't know who that is, he came back with you should know who your co-workers are. Really, this organization has 168,000 employees here in the US and Canada. Had he mentioned my boss or even the President of the company I could have answered differently. He of course asked to speak to a manager, which I happily gave the name and if he had a pen I could give him the number. Which he proceeded to ask to speak to the person in charge here. Well I'm the only one that works in the office. Then he argued that I must be a contracted company, no sir I'm with blah blah blah company, this is just a very small facility compared to the other facilities in this company. I'm so sick of corporate management people thinking they can talk down to people like me in the work force. Without people like me, you wouldn't have a company to run. (his company does business with mine) People like my co-worker and I are hard to find, my co-worker relies on me and I on him, when either of us misses work the others job falls to us as well. I told him that if he didn't like the policies and procedures that he should update his Service Level Agreement to allow anyone in to inspect his vehicles with no documentation needed. I'm glad he doesn't have a huge fleet in my area, this is the first one in over 2 yrs. from this company. I was polite, but firm, with a bit of sarcasm thrown in. How do you handle people like this? Do you find that corporate higher ups can be difficult to deal with? Hope others are having a better day!

I'm so sorry you had to deal with someone like that. Good for you handling it with tact and sarcasm. I worked in and inbound call center, so I got calls from all kinds of people.

I have a call center that deals with most calls from owners, and I certainly wouldn't want to work there. Some of the calls they have to deal with, UGH!

He sounds like a bit of a lout and should mind his manners.

I always find it odd that the people in charge, who also have policies and procedures to adhere to are the same ones wanting special treatment. I think he needs to take the customer service training that I do on a monthly basis.

It is starting to get better. Always feel better after a small rant of my own. Better to rant in a 'discussion" than to go off on some unsuspecting soul.

you handled the whole thing great. when i used to work for Walgreen's people would tell me that they were going to have my job. I told them that would be nice. And they got mad and left cussing. I was polite I told that that would be nice. what more did they want.

Thank you. It amazes me when people call up and just start going off, without ever giving me a chance to explain or try and correct a situation. I really have no desire to assist people like that. I'm very fortunate to work in the environment that I do. I'm the only person in this office and my boss is a 4 and half hour drive away. Most angry calls I get are about storage fees and staying after hours or coming in on the weekend. Those are really easy calls for me, regardless of how angry the person is. My boss doesn't authorize the overtime, and he rarely waives storage fees. I have no authority to waive fees and I don't work for free. When people start cussing I ask them politely to stop or the conversation will end. Usually they quit, that is one thing that I won't tolerate, is a person cussing me out. Now any other time cuss words don't bother me. I have been around it nearly my whole life, but not in anger.

It is purely egoism. Rules and regulations should obey everyone.

I treat everyone the same, and follow what ever agreement the company has in place.

Temper tantrum. Not much you can do but let them cry. And I think what you describe—remain polite but hold your ground—is the only thing you can do. But above all, don't argue.

My costumer service training that I do monthly teaches us how not to argue.

@msiduri, we have online courses that take about 15 min to 30 min each. They train on how to deal with the difficult customer, to language barriers and accents. Some is interesting and helpful others are funny.
