Service Dog Type

I have a daughter that is autistic. She has become a wanderer. We are trying to find a dog that would be suitable to make into a service dog. She is scared of big dogs but I realize a small dog will not keep her in the yard or house. What kind of dog do you have and what do you like about the work it can do? Was it easy to train?

My son's autistic as well, and he loves dogs. But beyond my point, my mom has a dog that they THINK is a German Shepard mix, while my son hasn't seen my mom's dog for about 3 years. When he was younger my mom's dog was extremely protective, and was great at letting me know when he needed me.

We have pitbulls and a bulldog at my parents' place. We never had the time to train them. They are ferocious.
