Deer In The Road

Last night, my grandson, who is 15 years old, was driving home from his karate class. He just got his learner’s permit, so my son was in the car with him, of course. There was a car coming toward them when they spotted a dead deer in the road on their side. My grandson has very little experience driving so my son had to grab the wheel and try to avoid both the oncoming car and the dead deer. He managed to miss the oncoming car, but ran over the deer with one tire. He said he doesn’t know what damage was done to the undercarriage of the car, but one of the running lights was damaged. He had to wait until this morning to check the car. I wasn't up when he left for work, so not sure what he found. It could have been much worse. It was my grandson’s car, so I hope that it is not too badly damaged. My anxiety about him driving just went up a few more notches. I know he needs to learn to drive but I don’t know if my nerves can stand it.

It is a good experience for him? Hope so. Deer's on quiet road pose a risk. Drivers need to be always alert when being alert is not otherwise needed.

We have a lot of deer in our area. Someone is always hitting a deer. I hit one myself several years ago. Messed up my headlight. The deer kept running.

@IreneVincent I've hit a dog once in my life. It hurts me to hit animals but it happens a lot on the roads I've noticed. I had a deer run alongside my car and suddenly without notice ran across the road in front of the road to escape. It was so close.

I hit a cat once that suddenly appeared from nowhere. I think it escaped because the road was empty afterwards but it made me feel sick knowing that it had taken some nasty knocks from the car. Hitting a large animal must be traumatic, especially for a young driver.

A rough lesson, but a good one on driving skills. Good that no one was hurt in this one.

Yes, thankfully, they didn't wreck the car. It did mess up the car some though. One piece up under the car was torn off and laying in the ditch.
