In the 1980's, smooth jazz was becoming quite popular ( I blame Kenny G.) Even the legendary Miles Davis was making songs that fit smooth jazz formats. In fact, Miles is #3 in my Favorite 80's Jazz Songs series, with his cover of Michael Jackson's hit "Human Nature." Jazz trumpeter Miles Davis began recording in 1944 and continued until his death in 1991. He was a forward-thinking chameleon, constantly changing and inventing (Quincy Jones once credited Davis with reinventing jazz five times.) Davis won numerous Grammy Awards during his career, and (I exaggerate) if there's a Hall of Fame, he's in it (including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.) His 1985 album, You're Under Arrest, featured two smooth jazz tunes that would become live staples in Davis' concert setlists: Cyndi Lauper's "Time after Time," and Jackson's "Human Nature." Miles' version of Michael Jackson's hit really doesn't stray very far. It's instantly recognizable, with the main difference being Jackson's sweet vocals replaced by Davis' sweet muted trumpet.

So, smooth jazz is Kenny G's fault. Next time I see him I give him what for!
