I've done a couple of series of discussions about hit songs that you may not have known were cover versions. I'm turning that around this time, looking at songs that have been covered...but people generally don't remember the cover. Here's the first one.
#10: Another Saturday Night
Usually when you hear this song you're going to hear the classic Sam Cooke original. And why not? He wrote the song, and he had the first hit with it. It's one of the classic, career-defining songs for Cooke. His version came out in 1963 and hit the Billboard pop top ten (as well as reaching #1 on the R&B chart).
Did you know that British folk-rock singer Cat Stevens also did the song? And that his version in 1974 peaked at #6 on the Billboard chart, four spots higher than Cooke's original?
If you think that's hard to believe, wait until I get to the #1 song in this countdown.....
Cat Stevens is now known as Yusuf. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. Sam Cooke was shot to death in December 1964 after attacking a motel clerk.

I only knew the Sam Cooke hit. No idea Cat Stevens covered it.

It's a classic. I'd forgotten that Cat Stevens did it too. I'll have to dock myself a few points.

I only remembered this one the other day. It was a hit in the UK in the summer of 1974 and was the first version of that song I ever heard, years before I heard the Sam Cooke version.
