When I was a child (10 - 12 years old) some people moved in next door that had two small children from France. The parents both spoke French and English. My younger sister and I would come over and play with the children so the mother could get some house cleaning, baking and more done in the house and yard.
I picked up on some of the words and phrases that she would say to her children and I would ask her the meaning. One day I remember that we were in the basement playing while the mother was doing laundry and the door bell rang. The woman ran up to answer the door and it turned out that it was one of her french friends that spoke some english as well. I said something in french to one of the children and the woman over heard me. She asked the mother if another french friend was over because my pronunciation was so good.
That made me happy!
The next year they moved again and when I was in 7th I was offered to take a foreign language...... and guess what i picked? FRENCH. We moved to another county and I re-took French I class in 9th grade. Between not having anyone to speak what I learned with and my "teenage stuff" I lost track of it. Several times I have wanted to re-learn the little bit of the language that I had learned and learn more advanced thru the years and I never got around to it.

It is easy to lose it if you don't use it. You should take a refresher course. I am not sure if it is offered in your are or not or even an online French course would help. You would pick it back up quite easily.

It may be easier to pick up a foreign language communicating with a native speaker of it.

@dfollin Yes, the best time to pick up language skills is when you're young. Somehow it's easier to pronounce and remember words. But having said that, it's still possible to learn a new language when one is advanced in age. Only needs commitment, time and effort.

it's easier to learn another language when we're young, we are like sponges or parrots. sometimes, spending sometime in a place where it's spoken will help revive it. maybe you can watch french films, tv shows, etc with or without translation/subtitles from youtube for a start?
