You hand braid it, or layer it.

I had the same problem as a little girl. Ouch. My mother began using a mixture of white vinegar and water to rinse my with after shampooing it. It helped a great deal.

I had problems when I was younger and sometimes even now, because I have let it grow out long. I always brush it before I wash it, put conditioner after I wash it, Brush it out after I wash it. I also try to brush it out at least three times a day. The wind can be a pain with my hair sometimes... I hope this may have helped..

I dont know if a detangler is the same as a conditioner. My daughter is 8 years old, i use a conditioner after she shampoos her hair in the morning. Before she goes to bed, i make it a point that she brushes her hair as if she was on her way out of the house. I noticed that when she does this her hair is not a rats nest when she gets up the following day. Hope this helps. Please tell me if it does.

My four year old daughter has hair down to her bum, so you can imagine how much more difficult it is for me LOL. Don't bother with the store bought detanglers, they never work as good as ones you can make yourself, plus if you make it yourself you can play with the amount until you get a perfect strength. I braid my daughter's hair every night to stop it from tangling as well.
To make your own detangler just mix water and regular conditioner in a spray bottle. The exact amount depends on the brand and how strong you need it to be. Me I put it a fair amount of conditioner. Just shake well before use and your good to go. This also seems to do a good job of keeping her hair really soft.
