Jeff Todd reports the news the Detroit Tigers have hired former Pittsburgh Pirates and Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon to succeed Wally Joyner as the hitting coach of the Detroit Tigers on Friday. Joyner decided to pursue other interests than return as the hitting coach of the American League Central Division team in the 2017 baseball season. McClendon managed the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2001-2005 and the Seattle Mariners from 2014-2015. McClendon managed the Toledo Mud Hens to a last place finish in the International League during the 2016 baseball season. McClendon will bring his experience of coaching to the Tigers who finished in second place in the American League Central Division with a record of 86 wins and 75 losses.

McClendon will be handy to have around in case his services are needed as interim manager.

It is a possible that McClendon could be an interim manager next year if Brad Ausmus gets fired by the Tigers management.
