Drool and Ghoul at the Pool

Well, after getting up at 5:30am to set up and prepare for our second dog-themed event of the weekend, the Dog Days 5K Race and Fun-Run for Dogs kicked off about an hour ago, and everything is running smoothly for that event. Our first event, a Dive-In Movie last night at the pool, drew in 130 people. We were expecting more, but when the cold front came through I think people were intimidated to sit in cold pool water for 2 hours to watch a movie. But the turnout was still good! It is now time for me to turn my focus over to our third event of the weekend, our annual Drool and Ghoul Howl-o-Ween Spooktacular at the swimming pool. Today, at 11:30am, we open the pool up for dogs to come swim. It's the final day of our swimming "season" at this particular pool, so we close down after today. Besides dogs-only swimming, we will also have a pet costume contest, dog relays races in the pool, demonstrations, raffles and lots of prizes. Vendors, pet businesses, and animal shelter representatives will be on the pool deck showcasing their products and services. We will have food trucks on site for people and a doggie treat truck for the dogs. We'll also give each dog who attends a doggie ice cream treat, and after swimming in the pool, all dogs will be treated to a free bath! The media loves covering this event, and I expect I will probably have to give 5-6 interviews today with newspaper and tv reporters. It's a beautiful, cool, crisp day here, and so we couldn't have asked for better weather for our event! We are one of only a handful of public swimming pools in the nation that offer this special event for dogs, so it is something I am very proud of! Now...I'm off to work. See you all in a couple of hours!

Wow sounds like fun! Have a good day at work! You aren't shy at all for interviews and reports. Have you been on the news before too? Have a nice weekend!

@moffittjc Wow! Go you! I am not a social person when it comes to being interviewed though. But that's good you enjoy it (minus the few incidents)

@infatuatedbby I just have fun with it! Most of the news reporters here are either college students, or freshly graduated, and this is often their first job. Sometimes they are more nervous than the people they interview! I always put them at east, which then helps put me at ease. There have been many reporters who have become friends with me because I was so good to them during interviews! It's always nice to have news reporters on your side! Even when I had the negative incidences this summer, the reporters went easier on me because they knew me. Otherwise, they could have really raked me over the coals!

Yes, I have to give interviews all the time! I've probably been on the news hundreds of times throughout my career. I probably interview more often than our city's Public Information Officer! lol When it's fun stuff, like today's event, I love to give interviews. When it's for something controversial, or something negative, I'm not to fond of those interviews. I had to do two bad interviews this past summer when we had a couple of near-drowning incidents in our pools.

@Drosophila You and I would get along just fine then! I'm actually allergic to them, so no dogs in my household! haha

It's so much fun that you don't even notice all the hard work that goes into the event. Plus, I have no trouble getting extra staff to volunteer to help work the event, since they all like being around the dogs!

Yup, had a great turnout today, as it was a picture-perfect day! Over 100 dogs and probably about 250 people. It was a great event!

Sounds like a blast. Have a great day and looking forward to hearing all about it when it is over. For now have fun and smile for the camera with all those interviews you will be a local celebrity when all is done.

The event was amazing! We had over 100 dogs, and close to 250 people come out. The weather was picture-perfect, and we couldn't have asked for a better day! We even had about 30 volunteers come out from several different clubs at the University of Florida to give us a hand. Always nice when we can get free labor!

@Happy2BeMe Now, if we can just have equal success with today's event, the weekend would be perfect!
