Moving the Endeavor Space Shuttle Through Los Angeles

One of the most amazing parts of bringing the Space Shuttle Endeavor to Los Angeles four years ago was to see this gigantic aircraft being towed through the streets of the city.
Hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets to see it. Millions more watched on television.
The Endeavor was preceded by a crew of workers who moved power lines and trimmed trees so the shuttle could pass. In some locations, it barely missed hitting trees and buildings by only a few inches. People hung out the windows and balconies of their homes, watching it move slowly past them.
It was truly a memorable and exciting time in the "City of Angels."

It's always worth the disruption to traffic for priceless bits of history to be placed in museums.

@ElizabethWallace - Yes, it was definitely worth the disruption to traffic. When we were watching a video about it, the girl sitting next to me said, "That would have been a great excuse to miss work ... I couldn't get out of my driveway because a space shuttle was blocking it." LOL

@ElizabethWallace - Ha Ha! Yes, I'm sure a few people did use the space shuttle as an excuse to be, at the very least, late for work.

@DeborahDiane A very creative excuse, and for some, true.

@jaboUK - Yes, the Endeavor is huge and moving it along the streets of LA took nearly 70 hours of moving time. It was on television almost constantly during those hours, and it was fascinating to watch!

@Juliaacv - Moving the Endeavor from the airport to the museum, through the streets of Los Angeles, took nearly 70 hours. Hoards of people lined the street day and night while it was going on!

@JamesHxstatic - Even four years later, nearly everyone I know has powerful memories of the moment. Everyone was inspired and awed by what it took to move the Endeavor to the museum.

@just4him - It was incredible to see them move the Endeavor through the crowded streets of Los Angeles. Who would have thought they could pull it off?

@DeborahDiane It looked amazing on the video. The wing span looked like it would take out the sides of the street.

@Hatley - I saw the space shuttle fly over, but I didn't get to see it towed through the city in person. However, I love the video of it. It was amazing!

@DianneN - As far as I know, not a single plant or structure received a scratch. Trees has to be trimmed, but none had to be completely removed. It was amazing to watch them move the Endeavor on TV!

@franxav - They didn't need to do it. However, the last few space shuttles were given to science museums across the U.S. after they were decommissioned, but only if the museums could arrange to get the space shuttles to the museums. In this case, it meant towing it through one of the most congested cities in the world!
