Song titles aren't copyrighted, so there are lots of songs out there that are completely different but having the same title as another song. While there are countless songs that suffer from this (remember that time I posted about the bluegrass song "Fox on the Run" and had to begin by saying "NOT the Sweet song!!!"?
), I'm counting down my ten favorite song titles that have two completely different songs behind the same song title.
#7: Monday Morning
Fleetwood Mac began as a blues-rock band in the late 1960s and slowly morphed into the legendary rock band we all know. The transformation, in my mind, began when Bob Welch joined the band. You can hear completely different sounds on Bare Trees and Mystery to Me than the early-era Fleetwood Mac. And, when Welch left the band, he was replaced by Lindsey Buckingham, who brought his girlfriend, Stevie Nicks along as part of the deal.
The rest, as they say, is history.
In 1975 their album Fleetwood Mac slowly took them into multi-platinum success, thanks to hits like "Over My Head" and "Rhiannon." The album opens with the great Buckingham rocker "Monday Morning" and sails on through other great songs. It's definitely one of the memorable albums of the 70s.
Twenty years later there was a British band called the Candyskins, a band that I came to know more for who they were than what they sounded like. The front men were brothers Nick and Mark Cope, the sons of actor Kenneth Cope. I had a crush on Kenneth in the mid-70s when his best-known show, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), aired on a local TV station (under the goofy title My Partner the Ghost). I still like the TV series (didn't care much for the remake, though...better special effects, but awful acting and a complete waste of Tom Baker's talents), of course, and have all the episodes on region-free DVDs.
Thanks to that I found the Candyskins and this song. It was their only top 40 British hit. (They've never had a US hit, and their only "notable" song over here is probably "Feed It," which was used in the film The Waterboy.)
The Candyskins do sporadic shows together, but are more or less a thing of the past. Their four albums, however, are quite good.
Monday Morning
Fleetwood Mac song:
Written by Lindsey Buckingham
From Fleetwood Mac, 1975
Candyskins song:
Written by Mark Cope, Nick Cope, and Nick Burton
From Sunday Morning Fever, 1997
Winner:
A slight edge to the Candyskins, but they're both great songs.
Here's the Candyskins' "Monday Morning" (posted because I assume that anyone who's listened to FM rock radio in the last 40 years has heard the Fleetwood Mac song):
