The Tourists are Arriving in Masses

This afternoon, as my daughter and I were leaving Disney World, memories of Hurricane Andrew flashed before my eyes. Was it because of an impending landfall of a Cat-5 hurricane, or due to the destruction of the landscape around me? No, it was due to the backlog of traffic on the highway. Heading north back to Gainesville, I could not help but notice that the southbound traffic on both the interstate and the turnpike were reminiscent of a mass evacuation. Only, in this case, it was incoming traffic to the state of Florida. Bumper to bumper traffic at a dead standstill or very slow crawl were visible out of my driver's side window the entire 2-hour trip back to Gainesville, and who knows for how many miles further to the north the traffic was backed up. Interestingly, we did not see a single accident, single emergency vehicle, or single police officer on the side of the highways the entire drive home, meaning there wasn't any kind of impedance keeping the southbound traffic backed up. No, it was simply all the snowbirds starting to head south for the winter. Tens of thousands of tourists from the north heading to Florida for warmer weather, sunshine, and tropical beaches! For over 120 miles (193 km), I could see license plates from dozens of different states in my rear-view mirror as I headed home. Thank goodness I was heading north, and not south, or my patience would have been pushed over the limit! Ahhh...the tourist season is upon us, and the great state of Florida will now be absolute gridlock for about the next 5-6 months as the snowbirds take over our state. Welcome tourists! We've been waiting for your money....er, I mean YOU, to arrive!

A blessing for the economic well-being of Florida, yes! A blessing for the people who live here? No way! Our roads will be clogged with traffic, our stores packed with shoppers, our beaches overrun by tourists, and our sanity tested to its limits! Oh, but did I say how much us Floridians love the tourists? haha

@infatuatedbby I've been noticing the same thing here. It used to be that there was a morning rush hour and and evening rush hour. Then, there was a lunchtime rush hour. Now, rush hour is pretty much all day long! Don't these people have jobs? LOL

California doesn't need any more people! You're too full already! Florida's getting pretty full too. Maybe we'll close the state in a few years and not let any more people in! lol

Yes, it definitely will make business owners in this state happy! Statistics show that for every 4 tourists that visit our state, 1 new job is created in Florida. Last year, a record 105 million tourists visited Florida, and from my experiences at the theme parks, I think 100 million of those tourists were at Disney! LOL

Yeah, but you're not a snowbird, so you wouldn't fit in with all the other tourists! LOL But I get what you're saying about the lottery! I'm sure our jackpots will skyrocket over the next couple of months! And yes, you should definitely visit the Keys. It's like you are in another world, a paradise completely separate from the United States! It's a great place!

My husband grew up in a little seaside resort down south and the residents are always grumbling about the tourists descending on the village over the summer months. But I don't know how they think they would survive without them.

We're the same way in Florida. During the winter, we complain about how much we dislike the tourists, but in the summer when they're all gone, we complain about how slow business is.

The tourism can be a good income and it can be helpful to the local economy and employment. I think usually the famous amusement parks are very popular and it is crowded all the time I remember long time ago my husband and I especially took a day off from work and we went to play in the amusement park. Fortunately it was not so crowded and we tried many exciting games.
