The mystery of the cat-wee smell

As I’ve mentioned before we recently bought a new (to us) house. We looked around the house several times before and it all seemed fine. After we moved in it was still fine, and we started working our way around decorating and cleaning the rooms. My partner worked hard painting ‘the den’ (as the previous people called it) and cleaned the carpet with a carpet-washing vacuum cleaner, and I put up new curtains and unpacked all our books onto the shelves. We felt quite pleased that that room was finished. Then, about a month ago, we suddenly noticed a strong smell in that room – that distinctive ‘tom-cat’ smell. We don’t have a cat, and neither did the last people who lived there for 19 years. We have seen a few cats around recently, so I guess it is possible one might have run inside, done the deed and then run out again without being seen while I had popped into the garden, naïvely leaving the door open, before I knew about the danger. My partner has cleaned the carpet twice more but it’s as bad as ever. I tried researching on the web for solutions but most advice seems to revolve around finding where ‘your’ cat has been as soon as possible and treating the spot. Since we didn’t know anything about any cat that’s a bit tricky and of course it’s now several weeks old. One recommendation was to use white vinegar on the carpet, and another was to use a cut raw onion to absorb the smell – now the room smells of pickled onions as well as cat wee! It’s really quite nasty and we can’t invite anyone in. I don’t know what to try next. I’ve even tried crawling all round the room on my hands and knees sniffing the floor, walls and shelves to see if I can find the source of the offending smell but I can’t find any smelly area, and yet the smell when you walk into the room is overpowering. The floors are concrete so there can’t be anything under the floorboards. Does anyone have any other suggestions? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2016.

Someone I once knew who dabbled with electrics reckoned that wiring which is in the process of burning out can emit a urine-type odour. Not sure I believe him as I've never experienced it but it might be worth checking sockets and light fittings etc. By the way, love the room. Can I come round and just sit in it and read your books all day? Once you've got rid of the smell of course!!

@WorDazza Luckily there's only me here, I just hope the neighbours don't happen to glance through the window!

@Fleura Make sure you tell everyone in the house what you're up to otherwise you might find yourself being fitted for one of those nice white jackets with the long sleeves that fasten round the back.

Yes I have, the smell is still there. I have crawled around on my hands and knees sniffing the carpet but it just smells of carpet, and I can't identify any smelly areas on the walls, shelves, curtain pelmets etc either, and yet the smell just permeates the entire room.

@epiffanie Now that's one possibility I hadn't considered!

I'm sure I read somewhere about something else smelling like cat urine. It would be more useful if I could remember what it was. Damp maybe? (PS: Your picture isn't big enough - I can't read the book titles!)

Blackcurrants are supposed to smell a bit like that - but there are no blackcurrant bushes here yet. Don't you find browsing other people's bookshelves interesting?

@Fleura I like seeing what books they have, whether I have them and whether they have anything I'd like.

A one time cat pee episode wouldn't make the room smell that bad....you might need to get rid of that carpeting....is could be mildew..

@Fleura It could be in the walls in what's ever under the carpet....

I've crawled all over the room sniffing the floor - the carpet just seems to smell of carpet! It is a mystery because it was fine for the first 2 months and then suddenly appeared.

I would get rid of the carpet. Is that where the smell is coming from? if you get down and smell it and it is, rip it up and deal with what is under it and or put down a new carpet when its in your budget to do that. If your lucky there will be hardwood under the carpet. Let us know when you figure it out...you made me curious.

Steam clean everything..the floors, carpets, couches, curtains, etc. Then hopefully you will get rid of that nasty smell.

The curtains are new and there isn't any other furniture. We've cleaned the carpet 3 times already. I really need to find the source but I just can't seem to track it down!

@Fleura I hope you figure it out soon. Could it be in the walls?

Wow, that sounds horrid. You may need to rip the carpet out and refloor if all else fails.

The strange thing is that I've crawled all over the floor sniffing the carpet, it just has that slightly rubbery carpet smell.

Carpets should be move outside for cleaning. I think identify the correct spot is the only solution to stop the smell.

Could it be the paint you used? Wasn't there a story a while ago about one brand of paint which stank!?

It's odd that it seemed fine at first, we ticked that room off our list and moved in some furniture and some of the girls' toys. Now we've had to move them out again to try and get to the bottom of the mystery but no luck so far!

Thanks! It is a real problem not knowing what to do when we can't find the source. We've tried all kinds of things - even examined the room under UV light because urine is supposed to glow in the dark, but no sign of any patches.

I seem to remember reading that several years back there was some glue on the market that made this smell.

No one drinks herbal teas? I know that Blackcurrant tea often smells like cat urine. Someone at work used to drink it and we were all wandering around checking people's trouser legs and briefcases for cat spray until we figured it out.

If you've ruled out the curtains and carpet, you will have to look at the next likely culprits. Could a cat have sprayed the plants before they came into the room? Also, if a book was sprayed, the smell would permeate the paper and hold it for ages.

All of those came in boxes direct from our last house, without being left outside or anywhere else where they could be targeted. And I've sniffed the plants and all around the bookshelves and can't find anything.
