The New Yorker?

So, I have debating on submitting a short story to the New Yorker.
Has anyone ever tried this, failed or succeeded?
I have some editing to do, find a name of an editor, and create my cover letter so it will not be any time too soon.
If you have attempted this, please lend me any advice that you can, it is much needed!
