New York Post Joel Sherman reports the news on Monday New York Mets second baseman Neil Walker, 31, has accepted a one year, $17.2 million dollar qualifying offer to remain with the team through the 2017 Major League Baseball season. Walker decided not to test the free agent market after since contract with the Mets expired at the end of the 2016 Major League Baseball season. Walker had surgery on his back on September 9, 2016 that ended his playing time for the remainder of the regular baseball season which may have played a factor in his decision to stay with the Mets. Walker has played in the Major Leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2009-2015 before he was traded by the Pirates to the New York Mets in exchange for right handed pitcher Jon Niese. During the 2017 Major League Baseball season, Walker will likely be sharing his second base duties with Wilmer Flores on a platoon basis.

Interesting. The market for second basemen was weak and I know the Dodgers and Angels were interested. But $17.2 million is a lot to turn down and he must have confidence to get a contract next year.

You may be right since the Mets want to extend his contract before the end of 2017.
