They don't seem to want our business..

After every high school drama production, the entire cast and crew go out for a celebratory meal at the nearby Applebee's. This has been a tradition dating back for many years. My children have been a part of the high school drama productions for 3 years now in one capacity or another, either by being in the show or being tech crew for the show, so we have been to many of these Applebee's functions. The past few times I have gone along, but sat separately from the kids, and just wait until they're ready to leave... The past couple of years though, it's been chaos. Back in March the high school musical was "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying". They had a cast of well over 100... and on Saturday night after the show each and every one of those cast members, along with the 20 or so stage crew, and a group of parents all headed over to Applebee's.. and what did we find? Even with advanced notice that so many would be showing up between 10 and 11 pm, they had sent all their staff home and kept only 1 server on. One of the times we went, a large group of kids got tired of waiting and left on their own to go to a different restaurant down the road.. which is a shame because the idea of this function is for the entire cast to celebrate together. It was the same last night after wrapping up the fall play... we found only 1 server working when 50 or so kids arrived to eat. We got there around 11... by 1am some kids were still waiting for their food! Also, as it was my son's birthday, I asked them to bring him a dessert and sing to him.. the server got really snippy with me and said they can't when there's only 1 person on.. That was a huge disappointment as I"d been looking forward to that happening at the cast party all week! The director of the show came over to say hi to me, and discussed with me how yet again Applebee's messed up. They'd been given notice that the kids would arrive, and yet again they didn't have the staff to serve us. I said, rather jokingly "We should go to Tully's instead" Tully's is a small chain restaurant nearby.. they have amazing chicken tenders, though I believe they're only in NY state in a couple places... Anyway, the show director and tech director (who are married to each other) discussed it and decided they'd try my idea next time... Hopefully there we'll get better service!

My daughter started middle school this year - and as she made it to drama tech, now I understand better about your drama world! I wonder why Applebees was not so accommodating since they should have known that it was a yearly tradition (which means a night of $ for them!). Or maybe there was new management and crew that didn't realize the seriousness of the notice? They were definitely understaffed that night. How sad that snippy server seemed too stressed to do a birthday. Well, I guess if they can't handle it, time for new traditions - the show must go on!

It's actually something they do 3 times a year... fall play, spring musical, spring play... though of course the musical is so much bigger. Sometimes the winterguard and drumline and marching band will do similar type things, and this Applebee's has always been understaffed every time we've been there!

@much2say Quite true, hopefully the other place will do better and the tradition will change. I don't like Applebee's food anyway.

@katsmeow1213 This could be a great night for business and in tips for the restaurant - that's too bad they wouldn't put out better service on these special nights. And since it's a tradition, it'd be a for sure event for them a good few times a year - better for business! Well, now they're going to be missing out when someone else gets your school's gigs!

I am a person that does not like to pay for terrible service. If they treat me badly they will hear about it, and not get any more of my hard earned money. I hope you do well at Tully's

I ONLY go to Applebee's when there is an event like this... but from now on I won't be eating there again myself.

@katsmeow1213 Maybe you should complain to the manager, the waitress does not care as much as he would.

I stopped going to Applebee's all together. Service I got wasn't good! They're missing out for you as well now! Hopefully the next area will be on point with service :)

Wow for that many people the bill must be huge. What is up with Applebee's? You would think they would welcome that kind of business. Yup I would not put up with that, time to find a new place that will welcome you all with open arms.

Each student pays for his or herself.. it's not like the school is footing the bill.. but still that is a lot of money that the restaurant is bringing in for one night.. and the servers are usually paid well too... so yeah, you'd think the restaurant would be more accommodating. Hopefully Tully's will do a better job!

@katsmeow1213 I would call the corporate office and complain. You might get a free meal or two.

That is not right especially when they had advanced notice and they knew everybody would be showing up. I think it would be a good idea to change restaurants. Sad that it happened and not fair to the kids who worked so hard on the production and just want to celebrate together.

I hadn't suggested switching before because they'd been going there for years, but when we're constantly treated this way.. we might as well find a restaurant that actually wants our business. Besides, I'm not a fan of Applebee's anyway. The food really isn't very good.

@katsmeow1213 I think it is a great idea to give another business thr business. They will probably appreciate it more. Good for you for speaking up.

Wow talk about bad service!! I would call the corporate office and complain. That is lots of customers/business being turned away or ignored for 2 years in a row! I feel bad for the kids.

I've thought about writing to corporate, but there's no point. I never did like Applebee's so it would be great if we went elsewhere.

As I was reading I was thinking you should change restaurants. So glad you are considering and perhaps letting the new place know how big it will be and asking for enough staff should be on the list of must haves. I never liked Applebees, now I know why....
