Mark Topkin reports the news the Tampa Bay Rays along with the New York Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays are interested in signing free agent Steve Pearce, 33, to a contract before the start of the 2017 Major League Baseball season. Pearce played as a utility player for the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles during the 2016 Major League baseball season. Pearce had surgery on his forearm in September could be a factor if any team wants to sign him to a new contract. If the Rays sign Pearce to a contract, he will be sharing first base playing time with Brad Miller during the 2017 Major League Baseball season. Pearce has played in the Major Leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees on two stints as well as the Baltimore Orioles on three stints and the, Houston Astros since his debut with the Pirates in 2007. You could call Pierce a journeyman player.

Pearce is a useful bench player with some pop in his bat.

One reason the Rays want him in their lineup for 2017.
