So The Metro Manila Film Festival became a Haven of quality films the moment I left Philippines

I was amazed on what happened to the MMFF this year, Rather than going safe with the mainstream money bait mind numbing cornier than cornfield movies, they decided to go for Quality films with Potential to win awards abroad. I know these movies have less Box office chance in the Philippines because people were so used on Cliche romance, Slapstick comedy, CGI infested fantasy movies and awful franchise movies, Indie films dominated this year!
The entries are pregnant with potential. For the first time a documentary made it in the top 8 of the film festival.
The entries these year have a horror movie that is actually scary, An intelligent black comedy, A light hearted romance that is not cliche, A steam Punk live action animation fushion, A documentary with real people and many more.
Most of the entries these year are Oscar Baits and not Box office Baits.

And i hope people would watch them , despite them not those very "corny" ones that always comprises the Filmfest .

@SIMPLYD I had seen fans of MASA movies complaining already. I think Philippine cinema needs to evolve though. The Vic Sotto movie and the Vice Ganda movie were both Trash. They can use this rejection so next year they will make quality movies not cheap box office bait slap stick.

I think these movies may struggle but if these is the type of movies we will have 5 years in a row, the Filipino audience might be able to adapt and learn to love them despite of not being MASA movies. Its a cultural reprogramming. My fear is that if these movies flop we will be back to Masa movies again.

They want Toronto Film festival grade and Cannes Film festival grade movies not Michael Bay box office bait.

Anyways, until i get my usual connection I don't think i can do much research about the films you mentioned.

Yup I am killing Lamb in Canada now. They look cute so i felt bad killing them first but I get used to it. I mean I had been killing rabbits before so butchering sheep I guess is not that bad.
The movies worth watching from the selections by far are:
Babae sa Septic tank 2- The first movie trashes indie movies while the sequel trashes Mainstream movies.
Saving Sally- This Steam Punk fantasy movie took 10 years to made. It is also the first full English Filipino movie since Igorota which is like from the 70's. (in 1940's Filipino movies are in English)
Sunday Beauty Queen- A 4 year in the making documentary about Filipino maids in Hong Kong
Seklusion- A religious themed horror movie about 4 Catholic Priest who encountered an entity

The masses are complaining that the Vic Sotto and Vice Ganda movies are disqualified but base on the trailer alone their movies are cringey garbage that deserves to be disqualified..

Sounds interesting. Good for them. That is what is lacking in Latvian films. They make them but they aren't very entertaining or they have subjects that are depressing.

There are people complaining because they dont have their Pang-masa movies like the Vic Sotto movies and Vice Ganda movies.....No offense to their fans but those movies are trash slapstick comedies. The top 8 this year deserves it.
