Baby eczema - please help!

My almost-6-month-old son has had baby eczema for about three months now, we see the doctor about it once every two to four weeks and we're keeping on top of it as best we can.
We're lucky to have a very good doctor, he cares so much and he's very experienced and competent, but he's an older man and in our experience (by "our" I mean me and my family) it's often the case that younger medical professionals can be more up to date with their knowledge of newer remedies.
Leonard's face is really itchy most of the time, I feel so bad for him and obviously he's scratching and rubbing it a lot, so I have to stop him constantly otherwise it will get even worse. Another problem is that he insists on sleeping on his front, he has done since he started rolling over, and despite me turning him back onto his back for the sake of safe sleeping (preventing SIDS) he rolls back over again straight away. When he does this, it means he's sleeping with one cheek against the mattress (the bottom sheet/mattress cover is 100% cotton, as are all of his clothes) which traps heat as he's asleep, and makes him rub his face against it as he's waking up.
He's had steroid creams on and off, but I've worried about the strength, so he's now on the weakest there is. They do make it better very quickly, but they also thin his skin so much that he starts to draw a lot of blood from one tiny scratch when he itches his face without scratch mittens on. I do my best to eliminate as much dust as possible in the house, I change his bedding every day, keep his toys clean, don't use anything but aveeno oil in his bath, and I put a generous amount of aveeno cream on him every time I change his nappy.
I read something last night about studies into diluted bleach as a treatment for eczema, apparently one was so successful that it was cut short so that the control /placebo group could also benefit from the real treatment. It was something to do with the bleach killing certain bacteria, but it could only be used on the body, not on the face. However it likened it to chlorine in a swimming pool, and this has made me wonder if it would be a good idea for me to take Leonard swimming. We've been putting it off because we assumed that chlorine would dry his skin out and aggravate the eczema, but now I'm wondering if it would be helpful. Obviously the chlorine would definitely dry his skin out, but plenty of moisturiser would sort that out, and the benefits might outweigh the downfalls

What a cute little bundle of joy.
Sad that he is having issues with his skin. By now you must have sorted it all out.

Thanks! Yeah it's baby eczema so all I can do is manage it until it goes away, but it's much much better now than it was before

I'm so sorry that you're son is having this kind of sickness, haven't talk to you in a while and yet now I see you're in distress over there. I hope some one qualified or an expert might help you one day. Because right now I'm not much of a help, maybe I will add him in my prayers.

Thanks
I've started putting Vaseline on his cheeks twice a day to seal the moisturiser in and that seems to have made a small difference
