My Neighbor’s House Was On Fire…

Trinidad And Tobago

Two months ago my neighbor’s house was burnt down. It was such a shock. My brother came home from market and said, “Look, Dass house is burning down!” We rushed out. In about 5 minutes more than half the house was already burn and it was already obvious nothing can be saved. Explosions could be heard. It was exactly 41 years to the day (also a Saturday) that their first house burn down. I can’t even begin to imagine what those people felt, especially the mother. Two houses burn in one lifetime! That’s hard. Dass is the last son living in the house. He is a mechanic by trade. He had gone to take part in car racing and was not home. The mother, with a neighbor and friend, was cleaning for Mother’s Day. She said the fire started in the son’s room but he said he did not have anything electrical in there. The first fire was just as mysterious as the second fire. By the time fire brigade reached the house was burnt to the ground. The pandit (local priest) advise them not to build in the same spot. What a tragedy. We still do not know what started the fire. Don't you think this is sad?

That's very scary. Any house insurance over there?

@infatuatedbby Poor lady, can't sell at this age (in her eighties). They are rebuilding ..but a few feet away from the spot. I saw a few days ago. we were afraid to bring it up because you know how people break down and cry.

Sure we have insurance companies...but who pay? They are so costly.

That is terrible and glad no one didn't get hurt. The fire department don't know what started both fires? I don't know if it is due to many things being plug in.

When the fire truck arrived there was literally nothing left. The mother was hurt because she didn't want to leave...they had to drag her out. The son said he didn't use power tools...and his garage was away from his room. It is sad, isn't it?

@Gita17112016. Yes that is sad. I hope they will get a new home through home insurance. I wish it was something if you experience something like this your house or things will be given back to you and built with no cost.

@CoolPeace Sorry, again...this is Trinidad. No insurance. The son has to build back from his own savings or get a loan from the bank. I don't think that's a good wish...because people will burn down their house deliberately! What do you think?

I think the fact it was 41 years on the exact same date that this happens seems like someone did it on purpose. Was anyone harmed in either fires? I hope not!

@Gita17112016 Of course I would try and would be devastated by the losses. How sad about the mother but thank god there were no deaths!

No, it just seem to be a very strange coincident. 41 years to the day. That's why they consulted the priest. There were very slight scuffling injuries. The had to drag the mother from the house. If it were you would you have tried to save the house?

@shaggin Yes, thank God. It happened so fast that there were not even time to save anything. I would have tries to save the house too. Anyway, they are rebuilding with the help of her other sons and daughters. The house is half way under construction.

It's up to the investigstors to find out what caused it based on evidence and not solely on testimony by residents.

@Gita17112016 don't you have a fire investgator in your fire department besides the firemen who put out the fire? They have to submit a complete report for legal purposes, supernatural explanations is another thing

@louievill Which country are you from again??? Just kidding. Those are things we see in the movies. Here the investigation is to take a report of what happen...and you could have two or three different reports. That's okay. No one expects anything. The fire men always reach AFTER the fire and the police a few days later. That's how it's here.

It is sad. My mother"s family farm home burned after she left to get married and have a family. I was teen with her while visited relatives down there and they mentioned the fire and said they had photos of it.. My mother never knew there were photos and she cried when she saw them.

It's always sad to see your possessions burn before you very eyes and to know that you have no place to spend the night! Tears are so easy to come to your eyes.

It is sad. The mother has other children with houses of their own, so she stayed there. We have some good pandits and some not so good. So, we pick and choose who we want to believe.

I think so too. The mother did say they saw the lines smoking. But what is there to do? What can they do?
