City slickers versus country hicks? No, just a countdown of my favorite songs that have "country" or "city" in the title. On this side, the "city" songs. Here's the next song on the countdown. #9: In the City - Eagles Some of you may or may not know that this was originally a Joe Walsh solo song! It was used in the closing credits of the movie The Warriors early in 1979. The Eagles' rendition of the song didn't come out until September of that year. I never saw the movie, but I did own The Long Run. This is easily one of the best songs on the album. (I thought that was a pretty uneven album, but then I'm one of the few people on earth who did not fawn over "I Can't Tell You Why.") This song paints city life in all of its stereotypical ugliness: "nothing grows and life ain't very pretty, no one's there to catch you when you fall." Walsh sang of moving "somewhere out on that horizon" where "I know there must be something better," painting the gritty picture as black as the cover of The Long Run. This remains one of my favorite Joe Walsh songs. In the City Written by Barry DeVorzon and Joe Walsh Recorded by the Eagles From The Long Run, 1979 (also recorded by Joe Walsh on The Warriors, 1979) A good live version:
