Would Have, Could Have, Should Have. Hindsight is Always 20/20

I got laryngitis on Wednesday without having any cold or other symptoms, although I think it's due to either sinus drainage or allergies. I almost called in sick yesterday since I didn't want to be talking to customers draining my voice further, but I didn't. I didn't call in. That part of my day was fine.
About one and one half hours into my shift I began to feel hot and a bit faint. I've felt this way before when I first went full-time, three years ago, but I never fainted any of those time. I was always able to sit on a close bench for a few minutes with water until the feeling passed.
This time I thought all I needed was a few minutes sitting down, but everything happened quickly. I mentioned to the person in charge starting her shift that I felt faint, and she immediately closed my lane down and got help. They brought a wheelchair for me and told me to wait until they were ready. The gal that was helping me is quite short, possibly not much more than five feet if that.
She took my arm to help me get into the chair, but between having my head down on the scale and turning around, I lost focus and actually fainted. The last time I fainted and fell was in church when I was about eight or ten years old. This time I went into a sort of dream. I do remember trying to catch myself on the way down with my right hand. There's a metal back to the u-scans that were directly behind my area that I tried to grab, but the weight of my body falling caused that hand to bend backward. It was a bit of work getting my hand to let go. I'm a bit surprised that I remember doing that since I was already within the faint, I think.
I think the girls helping thought they were helping me not have much of an impact but my face did hit the floor and I broke off the bottom section of my two front teeth. That's the only thing I broke. I think I sprained my right hand.
In the image, the left picture is my left hand which shows the veins and bones. I decided I needed a comparison shot. The right shows some swelling on my middle finger and the top of my hand nearby.
It only hurts when I try to open it up more. When I woke this morning I wasn't able to open it at all. I called in sick since I need that hand working properly to do my job. Now, don't get mad at me, but I decided to do a few dishes and the warm water running on my hand actually made it possible for me to open it up a bit more. When I got up, I wouldn't have been able to have my hand as it is in this image. Hey, I can even type without it hurting.
I just finished breakfast and my girls may take me out for lunch. Or I may just spend time with them since I just ate. As far as I know I fainted only because I got too hot, unless my blood pressure dropped for some reason too.

Actually, other than that fall and no voice, it was a good day, but I tend to be more optimistic than not. I will probably have a doctor check me out, but I want to make sure work will pay the bill first.

Be careful there may be a reason you fainted. Good you didn't go to work. Take care

Oh my goodness, I
Hope your hand feels better soon and what about your poor front teeth? But getting to spend time with the girls sounds wonderful.

@MarshaMusselman I think with front teeth they can just fix them, I know they did my daughters without putting crowns.

@BelleStarr My front teeth were already crowned several years ago when I tripped at work and landed much the same way but that time I was awake when going down.
I went in to my dentist today to see if they had caps to put on them, but my dentist wasn't busy at the time and he filed them down a bit with his instruments so I wouldn't have to worry about biting my lip if I happened to fall again. I'll wait to see whether work will pay for the teeth before redoing those. I may even wait a year or so if they don't bother me and I can still eat okay.
With my upcoming surgery in a few months, I don't need to add any extra expenses to my list.

It was great to spend time with my daughters. They spend lots of time with each other each week and one still lives at home, but I don't get to spend much time with my oldest daughter, so this was special. I just hope no one from work saw me or they may question why I wasn't working.
My oldest daughter is moving to the other side of the state by January, so that made it doubly welcome.
My teeth don't hurt and I've thought about not worrying about them right away since most of those that I showed them too didn't even notice they were chipped right away. But, since I don't know why I fainted, although, it could be due to sinus pressure, maybe, I'd hate to fall agtain and bite through my lower lip. So, even if I don't get the crowns immediately, I will see about getting caps or whatever they do these days.

@jaboUK The swelling has gone down some each day and there is almost definition of the knuckles on top of that hand. The swelling that mainly resided near my third finger has moved down and spread out more, but it's still less than it was even this morning. I've made sure to ice it at night and again during the day somewhat.

I fell in almost the same positiion at work twelve years ago or so, but then I tripped on a cord from the scanners we use when people have large items on the bottom of their carts. I was awake during that fall that time. Yesterday, I didn't have any clue I was 'losing it' until I tried to grab the piece of metal where I sprained my hand, and then I at least had the presence of mind to let go so I wouldn't break that same hand. Between having my head on the scanner and hearing the other employee tell me she was ready to help me get to the wheelchair and then catching my hand and waking up on the floor with bits of tooth or crown in my mouth, I wasn't aware of what was taking place.
When anyone notices someone having difficulty they're supposed to make a call on the intercom for those trained to come running. THe gals helping me thought everything was under control and were waiting to make that call once I got in the chair.
My teeth aren't as damaged as I thought they were at first, but the inside of both got chipped. I could manage with them for a bit as they don't hurt, but I'm now concerned that if I fell again I'd bite off part of my lip or something since it is a bit sharp. I can get a temp from my dentist, but will talk with the secretary on Mond about getting help with payment from workmans comp.
I have a meeting with my vascular surgeon on Monday to get my unno boot removed. I'll ask them what they think about my hand. I doubt there is any underlying problem with me fainting, but will check on that too just to be sure.

I think that work should have sent me to the ER and I don't understand why they didn't. I'm talking to the secretary on Monday to see if Work comp will cover the replacement of my crowns. They did do an accident report, so if I do have problems arising from my hand it should be covered.

@just4him My husband said someone thought work asked if I wanted an ambulance and I said no, but they may have asked when I was still coming to. I'm sure they didn't repeat it later when I was filling out the reports. He, my husband, also told me that I wanted to go back to work instead. The thing was they sounded like they planned on sending me home not to the hospital, and at the time my hand wasn't swollen and I need the money, so I opted to work.
Now that it's swollen, I think work could pay for a few days off and my two front teeth. I won't know about that until Monday, though. I wrote about my hand in the report, so that shouldn't be a problem later on I hope.

Sorry to hear that Marsha- you do work hard and should have listened to yourself and called in sick. So sorry you fell and hope that hand and your teeth are alright. Let us know how you recover. Do you think you got hot from the flu or whatever was making you have laryngitis?

The temps in our store vary depending on where you're working. The lane I was on at that time had no air flow or not then as it wasn't windy outside. When It's windy the wind blows through the doors making everyone cold. It was colder in the store this fall, more than usual because someone didn't want to turn on the heat. So many of us began wearing our turtlenecks early.
In fact, one gal never had to wear them before so she knew the heat wasn't on. Now it's probably on, but I'd rather be warmer than colder. Not sure what I'm going to do now. I may look for a crew cut, long-sleeved sweater or undershirt type thing to wear underneath. I've no clue why I fainted or whether my getting hot was the major culprit or not.
Some think it was because I didn't eat much, but I never eat much before going to work since I do eat three times there.

@MarymargII It appears that the pain of having the first application of the unna boot wrapped to tight was possibly what caused me to faint. Considering that the wrapped leg is now my main leg since I don't put much weight on the leg needing the knee replacement. I did get a blood test today to rule out anemia, but I doubt that was the problem since I've not been tired at all.

I don't know that e verything in this particular situation is so very obvious, but definitely the idea to stay home and not go in looks that way now. On the other hand, I could have fallen at home and had to pay for it all myself. I'm hoping our workman's comp will foot the bill with at least the teeth.

@MarshaMusselman You would not have been standing as much at home, which would have seriously reduced the chance.

@Asylum Very true, and if I felt that way, I could get to a chair more easily.

Glad you're ok and I hope it's nothing serious. I felt faint a couple of times in my life but have never fainted yet. Once it was when my first wife was about to have our first child and they drew blood and I saw it gushing and I had to sit down very quickly. I was 22 years old.

I doubt it's anything serious, other than the seriousness of falling down without being able to do anything about it.

I've been using both a frozen pack and a heating pad on my knees for the past several months, but not at the same time. I wasn't sure whether the heat would benefit my swollen hand or not. I think until the swelling goes down the freezer pack is the better idea, but I may go back and forth somewhat.

I will be sure to call my family doctor on Monday. I'm seeing my vein doctor too to get a unna boot removed. They can see what they think about my hand. I'm sure it's not broken otherwise I wouldn't be able to type or use it at all. It's tender mostly because it's still swollen, but I can open it a lot further than I could this morning. At least it didn't turn black and blue.

@DianneN When I see my doctor again, I'll be sure to talk to him about it. I have normal to low blood pressure and have been dizzy before when getting up too fast, but that hasn't bothered me for the past five years or more. I'm also wearing an Unna boot which was tighter last week. The PA that put it on didn't ever hear of anyone fainting fro wearing one, but I think that most people needing them aren't working or at least aren't standing at their jobs.
I'll discuss both with my doctor. I did work yesterday with a new Unna boot on. I made sure to have them wrap it a bit looser this time.

@MarshaMusselman I'm more concerned about the fainting. Glad your hand is feeling better. It's probably just bruised from the fall.
