Far far ago {2014 to be precise} my MiL had just under half a lung removed. She'd been a constant twenty-a-day smoker since her teens {it's okay, she gave up for both her pregnancies, managing to survive without a ciggie till the day she gave birth} and it had finally caught up with her in the form of - SURPRISE!! - cancer. She didn't want any other treatment and it wasn't pushed on her, so she only had the surgery. My MiL only ever hears what she wants to hear, so believed she was cured, ignoring words like remission. She didn't return to smoking again, but she does enjoy her vaping. Since September she's been coughing. Some Loyal Readers may remember I wrote a post about how she wouldn't go to the GP or ring her nurse at the specialist Hospital. Even when she did go to the GP she was only given antibiotics and didn't bother going back when it became apparent they did nothing to help her. When she began coughing up a lot of blood on Sunday night, my BiL whisked her off to Hospital. You can probably guess the rest ... SURPRISE!! Cancer came back. Will he stay? Will he take her away? Who knows. She's home, waiting for an appointment to find out how bad it is this time and what her options are. Husband says she sounds surprisingly positive, which is just weird. Christmas may be cancelled.

I'm surprised, with her history, that she was only given antibiotics. It would have been prudent to have her checked out immediately but let's not get into the state of the NHS right now!! Hope her positivity is rewarded.

@Poppylicious Possibly a defence mechanism. She's trying to persuade herself as much as anyone else! I hope it turns out well for her.

She probably downplayed her symptoms, knowing my MiL. Also, we don't know what the GP said. She has a way of twisting things ... I've been with her when she's been told something, only for her to tell someone else something completely different to what I heard the person say to her!

Cancer can be cruel. She has probably known for some time that this is a possibility. A positive attitude can go a long way in keeping people going. Don't cancel Christmas just yet.

She's normally quite negative ... I wondered if knowing for sure has given her something to focus on.

@Poppylicious that could explain her response.

so sad, hope she is able to fight it - to me vaping is smoking and though not as dangerous it still is not healthy

I completely agree. There isn't yet enough evidence yet to say if vaping is a disease-free pastime either.

@poppylicious A whole mixture of stuff going on there. People don't always make life as easy as it could be. Blessings on you all.

Oh, no! I am so very sorry to hear that her cancer has returned. Why didn't she want to have treatment that could have possibly gotten rid of the cancer for good?
