Not all Anime are violent or fantasy based

Whenever there is an Anime discussion here in Mylot. I always see a post from a Mom commenting how much they don't like Japanese animation because they were violent, brutal, gritty or silly. Most likely these are moms of Teenage boys or young adult men who watches Shounen or Seinen genre of Anime which is marketed to boys and Men. I decided to make this thread to inform all the moms that not All Japanese Animation are violent or silly. Some of them have very serious and complex storylines and Also Anime for girls and women do exist. There are some romance Anime that caters to women and girls. There are also some drama Anime that falls under the genre drama. Classic novels like Little Women, Daddy Long Legs and Swiss Family Robinson and Heidi had been adapted for Japanese Animation. Some Anime series I can suggest for women are the following: His and hers circumstances- It is realistic portrayal of teenage romance between 2 teenagers who have strict parents who wants them to be the smartest in school. In Japanese schools the most popular kid in school are not the jocks and cheerleaders. The smartest kids own the school. You can see how much parental pressure Japanese teens go through. Candy Candy It is the only Anime my sister watched and it is considered a classic because it is from the 1970's. It is historical romance set in 1900's United States. It is about an orphaned American girl named Candice who will fall in love with a rich Scottish boy. I heard this show became extremely popular in Italy and France during the 1980's. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 It is a family drama about a little girl who have to survive after an Earthquake. We know Japan always have earthquakes and this is a realistic depiction of what Japanese families go through during earthquakes Shojo Cosette An Anime adaptation of the popular novel Les Miserables. It gives you more details of the story more than the musicals and past movie adaptations. This drama focuses more on Cossette than Jean Val jean though. Yuri On Ice Despite of being a gay themed love story. This was embraced well by the anime audience. Even heterosexual men loved it. It is about a male figure skater named Yuri, He placed last in the grand prix tournament and he is about to give up on his career but his Idol and crush named Victor decided to train him. It won wiped out all the awards at the Crunchy Roll anime awards. -- I decided to make this discussion just to show that not all Anime are about people punching each other's face or explosive robots fighting aliens. Anime is a complex Art form with diverse genres and audiences. I am sure Filipino members here are familiar with Drama Anime titles like Cedie, Princess Sarah, Georgie, Remi and Mary and the Secret garden.

I love funny, serious, romantic, action and psychological anime. So many good choices out there. Yeah some can be very violent and bloody or just downright silly. But how is that any different from some American or British shows? Anime isn't for everyone. Sometimes it is an acquired taste, but people shouldn't judge based on just 1 or 2 they saw and didn't like. There is such a broad range.

I felt alienated making an Anime discussion because I always get a response from an Angry mom who sees her son watching it and have a huge disgust on it without knowing it has a very diverse selection of genres.

@DanieGirl80587 One thing I know at least our generation would be more open minded to pop culture outside America.

@CaptAlbertWhisker Well the mom should seriously keep her opinion to herself because there are many many people who like anime and anime merchandise.

Yes, not all are with violence as I am watching Major and I love it. It keeps me excited. The story is just simple but I get hooked on it. I am addicted to Sato and Goro now. I am too old for this but it makes me feel young. I even love the themesong of series 5.

Can I suggest Gingitsune? It's an anime depicting the life of a girl who live in a shrine. It focus on how people can harmonize between modernization and culture, yet lead a fulfilling life. There's also Silver Spoon, which depict the life of a smart boy with no ambition who enrolled at an agricultural school.

I can suggest Spirited Away. it is a movie not a TV show so watching it will be easy. It won an Oscar so it is worth watching. It is fantasy but it is the easiest Anime for me to suggest to Americans because it won an Oscar. If you want something that can make you cry, Watch "When Marnie was there" It is about a loner Blue eyed mixed raced Japanese girl who felt outcasted because she is an Orphan and she felt discriminated in Japan for being mixed. On a Vacation on her aunt's house, she will met a White girl who is daughter of expats, That girl is named Marnie. They will become friends. This movie is Oscar Nominated so it is worth watching too.

That one is too dark though. This is my attempt to convince moms and dads to watch Anime that is not from a genre they dont like. They generalize it based on what they see their kids watch.
