Sometimes I can't keep up with all the new words and phrasing

and it can be confusing. Like a commercial for United Way in which a lady says something like "we help families put aside their past and explore new ways to grow." So it leaves me wondering who she works with and what she does! She's talking about immigrant families and the commercial makes no sense to me the way it is phrased, I have no idea what her job is. Do you ever have trouble understanding what people are saying because of the way it is said? Do you ever wish that people would just speak plainly and say what they mean? Do you have an example of a word or phrase that leaves you wondering just what the speaker means?
