Buster Olney reports the news the Miami Marlins signed 35 year old A J Ellis to a one year $2.5 million dollar contract. Ellis will serve as the second string catcher of the Marlins during the 2017 Major League Baseball season behind J T Realmuto. Ellis began the 2016 Major League Baseball season with the Los Angeles Dodgers before he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies on August 25, 2016 along with right handed pitcher Tommy Bergjans in exchange for Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz and a player to be named later. Ellis became a free agent at the end of the 2016 Major League Baseball season before the Marlins signed him to a one year contract on Wednesday. Ellis will be playing baseball for his third team in the Major Leagues. Ellis played catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2008-2016 and the Phillies in 2016.

Ellis is reunited with manager Don Mattingly. Smart move to have a vet working with young pitching.

That is true since Ellis will serve as a coach on the field with the Marlins.
