Cold Arctic Air Has Invaded Virginia

United States
December 9, 2016 12:08pm CST
I had my pellet stove running all night and it’s still on this morning. The house is warm and cozy. It’s really COLD outside today and supposed to drop into the low 20s F tonight. I was going to go get my hair cut today, but I’m not going out in this cold weather. The sun is shining and the sky is blue, but the air is really cold. Monday it’s supposed to get up to the low 60s so I will just wait for Monday to run my errands. I really don’t like cold weather. Winters here in Virginia are generally mild enough. The mountains get a lot of snow, though, usually. I am hoping that the weather here will not be too extreme this winter. I’m heading for North Carolina for a week, over the holidays, so I hope the weather will cooperate with those plans. My oldest son lives in Winston-Salem and I have been making the trip there over the holidays for several years now. I always take my grandson too and we have a really good time. My son always has things planned for us to do, so I’m really looking forward to the trip.

Today we have about the same temperature but we consider that a warm day. I hope all works out with your trip to visit your son!

Yes, I know that Canadian weather is even colder. Brrrrrrrr. I don't think I could live there in the winter, but I think it would be marvelous any other time of the year. Many Canadians are "snow birds" who fly south for the winter.

Is the weather changing? I like the snow piles but its not easy to get around in it. Stay inside? Only if you can.

@IreneVincent I notice that too. Everything needs thought and being more careful than when we were teenagers

@Bluedoll LIfe as an older person is very much different. In my mind, I'm still a young person. Only my body has aged. It's difficult to realize that I just can't do the things I used to do when I was young. It's difficult to adjust my lifestyle.

Yes, I usually spend a lot of days indoors during the cold winter as well as the HOT summer. When I was younger, it didn't affect me as much as it does now that I'm older.

I´d flee from such snow if I could.

Have you ever seen snow? It snows in Chile, right? At least in the mountains?

@IreneVincent THe mountains have eternal snows. And my country is very long. In the south it snows several months of the year. And part of the Antartic belongs to us too. In the north, we have the dryest dessert in the wordl. I´m in the middle.

@marguicha That's what I thought. The snow capped mountains always have snow. And the Antarctic is at the southern tip, I guess. Maybe you are in the BEST part, in the middle.

Ah, those unpredictable Virginia winters. I was stationed in Norfolk (which is in southeastern Virginia, for those of you who don't know). It was usually mild (as opposed to places west of Richmond, where the snow usually buried towns). However, I remember the day I re-enlisted, my 23rd birthday: six inches of snow! And my birthday is in April!!!!!

Yes, sometimes we even have snow in April. It's rare but it does happen.

I hope so too. My son always plans some interesting things to do. New restaurants. A FUN poker night with some friends. We don't gamble. We play with poker chips. Also a Jeopardy night. We can't watch Jeopardy the week before. He records all the shows and we have a nice meal and lots of fun watching Jeopardy and have our own little contest to see who wins.

That's way too cold and snowy for my taste and comfort!

Yes, I am in Virginia too. I can attest it is cold outside. I actually turned my heat on, and until this point have been relying on a heater and an electric blanket.

I have an electric blanket also. I turn it on before I go to bed to warm my bed and I usually leave it on while I read for a bit, but I turn it off before I turn the lamp off. Otherwise I think I would get too hot.

I have a friend in Massachusetts that said they are having polar express-type weather so maybe it's all up and down the coast. When you leave for the week (definitely not a good thing to broadcast on the internet!) don't forget to let your faucets drip and open the cupboard under your sink. Even if you life in an apartment it's a good idea.

My house will still be occupied when I leave, so everything is still taken care of. But, I agree that its not good to let people know when you will be out of town. Thanks for your concern.
