Going Down Memory Lane and missing a turn.

To write down ideas before they fade into lost memory.
I refer to memory not as a terabyte hard disc in my computer but actually my own memory.
I sometimes think of things to write about, but before I can jot the ideas on paper, I soon forget.
This is a fatal flaw of my own memory.
I learned that the drug I take to combat anxiety, Ativan, is a drug that takes away the normal ability to remember things as what science refers to as SHORT TERM MEMORY LOSS.
So, knowing that I have this flaw, I have to keep paper and pen handy always. If I think of a good subject to write about, I am all too easily made to forget it before I can get it to print because of the distractions of my environment, television, conversations, phone ringing, company and so forth.
My own fatal flaw is that my DNA contains certain factors that make memory loss an INHERITED trait in my family, either on my mother's or my father's side of the family tree.
One day, I may be faced with having no memory of this day.
That is mainly why I learned early in life to take notes and later on in life to become a writer. When I write down my thoughts, I can't completely lose them.
So, what do you do to keep track of your thoughts so you can then put them to paper?
Are you one of the lucky ones, who takes your memories for granted.

I have to write down all my thought too, or else I'll forget! I do that with all my personal affairs, as well as all my work affairs. I keep a little notebook and pen with me that I carry everywhere so I can write down everything.

This is a good thing to do. Only don't give away your pen unless you have another extra handy. I have lost many many loners through the years. lol

@lookatdesktop If there's one thing I keep plenty of on hand, it's pens. It seems like pens disappear around my office like there's no tomorrow.

@moffittjc , This is why I buy them in a multi-pack at the office supply store. You can never have too many pens handy but then you might want to have your pen tied to your necklace to keep it from getting taken from you. lol

I wouldn't say that my memory is good but I think it is still sharp. I also keep a pen and notepad handy so I can write down ideas for writing.

@lookatdesktop good for you!
I keep my ideas in a notepad but so far, I have yet to write a full story/post from these ideas.

This method has proven invaluable to me personally for both helping me remember and to provide the substance of most of my posts.

I think you may need two note books and two pens, one for upstairs and the other for downstairs, lol.

You and I both do this. And I suspect many others also do the same. It's no accident that when a policeman issues a citation that he or she in fact keeps notes. lol

I can relate. I have never had a good memory, so I always write everything down.

I have confidence that keeping notes can be extra helpful when reading a good book that is very informative and to jot down pointers provided by the cooking shows. My wife is good at taking notes and I think she and I both know that it comes in handy for one thing to keep notes when a contractor bids on some work for a price and then later says, I don't remember saying that and my wife managed to pay the contractor exactly what he bid on a job here at the house. He couldn't find any logical argument that would convince her the job was worth 2 X as much as he had said and I also kept notes, but then in a court it would have been his say so to ours.

I keep writing down things like music themes I want to do. Otherwise, I totally forget.

You would be surprised at the good use of keeping of a journal if for nothing more than to keep up with important dates and activities planned ahead of time.
