Close call for Kitty

I had a scary moment with my kitty this morning. She'd been sitting on my lap for at least an hour, and got up as though she might jump down, but then she started turning like she was just trying to get a more comfortable position. That's when I noticed that somewhere along the line (before she'd been in my lap), she had put her leg through a loop in her collar, which was pulling it tighter around her neck! (It is a breakaway collar, but no matter how I adjusted it, there is always a loop that doesn't lay flat, she probably needs a smaller one, although she is a full grown cat. Pulling on that loop does not break the collar, but only pulls it tighter around the neck, as I know now). Of course then I forgot how to remove a breakaway collar, and I'm trying to find a button or something and forgot that "breakaway" means "pull-apart". DUH! In the meantime I'm making it worse, and my sweet kitty, who isn't much for meowing, just looked at me in a way that said "Help me". While she loves being petted and sitting in my lap, she doesn't enjoy being handled, but she let me turn her every which way trying to get the thing off her, which I finally did!
The scary thing is, I think she might even have done that while I was out yesterday, last night I worried she might be sick because of the way she was laying on the floor as though something wasn't comfortable. Even though she's not long-haired, her fur could still have been covering the collar around her leg. Glad I wasn't working today and caught that before she strangled herself with it! And now kitty is collarless until I find a better collar for her!

Oh poor kitty. I'm glad you were able to save her from her situation.

Me too! I don't think she was necessarily in immediate danger (well, until I started messing with it and made it worse for a minute!), but it definitely could have been a problem! The collar was probably bothering her, too...She'd been scratching her neck a lot, which is likely how that happened, and I haven't seen her do that since I took it off.

Could you just leave her collarless? We gave up on collars for our cats because they kept losing them, probably deliberately!

Yes, I'm probably going to do that. I just preferred having a collar in case she got out, she gets pretty close to the door sometimes when I come in. Also in case God forbid there was any kind of emergency where we had to leave (she doesn't really like being carried, and there might not be time to coax her into her carrier), or if someone broke into the house while I was out. I will just have to make sure to be extra careful.

That's scary and a matter if concern .
I hope you soon come up with a solution

Thanks! Yes, I might try a stretchy collar (although I'd thought a breakaway was supposed to be best) or find a better fitting breakaway. She doesn't go outside anymore, so the collar (or really the tag on the collar) is really just a precaution in case she gets out.
