I had a funny experience at the radiology lab today

When my turn came for the paperwork she asked me what insurance I had. "I don't have insurance, I'm cash pay" "Wha..what do you mean you don't have insurance?" "I cannot afford insurance premiums so I pay cash for all my medical needs." "Well....well, wait just a minute" and she goes into the back room to consult a supervisor! I was almost expecting them to come back with a cop to arrest me! They finally figured out the forms for me to fill out and of course they had no problem with the credit card machine, that probably gets used all day. I did not want to put it on my card but I'm flat broke right now and my doctor wants to see how my lungs are. (I quit smoking in October after smoking for 40 years) It was pretty strange to see that kind of reaction. It's almost as if I told them that I was missing my heart or that I was from the planet Saturn!

We seem to be heading nearer and nearer to a cashless society, don't we?

Yes, I think that's what they are working toward. I did have to put it on a card, maybe the words "cash pay" threw them.

I thought we were already there as I never see anyone paying for cash any more.

I get thsy reaction sometimes when I say I am paying cash. They are like what? Everybody pays with debit or credit cards. I guess they are just not use to people paying for their medical themselves there.

Maybe it's rare for them to get cash as payment.

I think it is rare. I was the only one there without health insurance and thus the only one that had to make any sort of payment. They bill the co-pay, which is usually small.

I had never thought of using radiology and funny in the same sentence or title. Do you in fact have three heads? That might explain their reaction.

Yes, it is. Our congress passed a law a few years back that everyone had to have insurance and the government put together a plan to cover everyone. The problem is not that the poor people are covered--that is wonderful!--but that people like me can't afford the premiums. I would have to pay around $1,000 a month for insurance with a $10,000 deductible so I would spend $22,000 a year before I got help with anything. That's more than half my income! People just assume that because of the law everyone has insurance but people like me pay $700 a year in fines for not having it.

Some people tend to overreact.
