A promise

I have a neighbor whom i find him very odd. He was wearing girls dresses every time I see him. He even wears bra. But his sexual preference is still straight. In our place, men wearing dress are kinda gay.
One time my partner and his friends were having a drinking session and this man arrives wearing a blouse with the bra strip out on its shoulder. As usual, they laughed at him, I mean we laughed at him thinking that it was a funny thing. Then he said, "Guys, guys, please understand my happiness, I am serious". Then the crowd is silenced. Another guy pats his shoulder and said, "Hey, it is okay, we are just lightening up the mood", He answered it with a gesture of letting the bra strip down his arm, and then they went on laughing and drinking.
I was confused so I secretly asked my partner why? He also doesn't know the reason why he is always doing that. Then last night, they had another drinking session. Right after that, I had the chance to ask. And I was surprised and at the same time so touched with his story.
It was a promise made to his dead wife. His wife had asked him to give away his dress but if no one would accept it he would instead wear it.
I know it was odd, binding yourself in a promise that will made you a subject of ridicule, but he really did it. I don't have the time to ask since when he started to wear his wife's dresses. It has been a year or two since we got here in this place, so maybe he was wearing it years way back then.

What do you mean - his wife asked to give away his dress if no one would accept it he would wear it?
Or, do you think he is exploring his sexuality?

It could be they're just trying to support his decision on exploring maybe. They are unsure?

@infatuatedbby that was what they said.. actually at first I wont believe someone would make you promise like that or make you do like that. but there were 3 of them who told the same thing.. 1 is a woman.. could they be just making stories?

@infatuatedbby maybe they already had an understanding (the man and his wife) and the neighbors are not privy to it..

i don't understand his wife's motive for making him promise something like that. what does his and her family think about it? do they have children?
i was expecting something like, "it's okay if you married again. i don't want you to grow old alone."

@hereandthere i got no chance to speak to the family.. only three of the neighbors. I was thinking the same.. it was just so odd.. but i don't want to think of something fishy also.. he seems a good person ..
