It's only fitting that, after Nine Inch Nails' cover of Joy Division's "Dead Souls" hit #4 in this countdown, that the original Joy Division version occupies the #3 spot in my Favorite "Dead" Songs series.
Post punk band Joy Division formed in Manchester, England in 1976, after guitarist Bernard Sumner and bassist Peter Hook attended a Sex Pistols show (drummer Stephen Morris and vocalist Ian Curtis rounded out the lineup.) It all came crashing to a halt when Curtis hung himself the night before the band was to leave for a tour of the United States. The highly influential group is often credited with inventing goth (it was Bauhaus, but Joy Division's dark, gloomy sound certainly helped.) Although they managed only two proper albums, the group is in the UK Music Hall of Fame. Don't worry, Sumner, Hook, and Morris reformed as New Order, one of the 1980's most influential electronic dance bands.
"Dead Souls" was not a part of either Joy Division album, and was not released as a single, yet it remains a fan favorite. The song is available on the 1981 compilation, Still, and the 1988 compilation Substance.
The band's history has been chronicled in the movie's 24 Hour Party People and Control. They are an all time favorite of mine, and "Dead Souls" is one of my Top 3 Joy DIvision tunes. Simply put, I love it.

I saw both movies. You have to wonder what would have happened if Curtis lived? Would major success happen or would Joy Division have had their moment and now be playing on the nostalgia circuit.

We may never have gotten New Order if they'd stayed together as Joy Division.

Hmm lots of interesting facts in that one. I did not know about and people not so kind on facts, but sounds pretty cool to me. I am liking this. The guitar is cool and Now I hear the singing know the song. It is awesome. The goth aspect and you might have to tell us more why you love goth so much. Seems like it does you right and would be interesting to hear.
