Yet another music series comes to an end. We're at #1 in my Favorite "Dead" Songs countdown: "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus.
Bauhaus formed in Northampton, England, in 1978. They are largely the band most considered as the inventors of goth (vocalist Peter Murphy is nicknamed "The Grandfather of Goth.") Including a couple of lengthy hiatuses, the band was active until 2008. In the meantime, Murphy has had a good solo career, while guitarist Daniel Ash, bassist David J, and drummer Kevin Haskins found fame as Love and Rockets.
According to Wikipedia, Bauhaus was together a mere six weeks when they recorded "Bela Lugosi's Dead" as a demo. This is important because, to these ears, "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is the greatest goth tune ever recorded. Hands down. And then I have listened to a LOT of goth over the years. And that's all you really need to know. It's that good.
And yes, you have heard this before. IF you have seen the David Bowie and Susan Sarandon vampire film The Hunger. That's Peter Murphy singing it at the start of the movie.
I do not claim to own this material, it belongs to Small Wonder Records. A hundred thousand views, keep it up! Lyrics: White on white translucent black capes...

No, not really. You could probably make a case for The Smiths, but no.
