During my tour to Kasi, I visited many places. There are many places along the bank of the sacred river GANGES. They are known by the term GHAT So Ghat means a particular portion of a place with steps arrangement to take a dip in the river Ganges. There are about 364 Ghats along the bank of the river. Each Ghat is given a name. There are Ghats like HARISCHANDRA GHAT, RAJENDRA GHAT, MUNSHI GHAT, HANUMAN GHAT, KEDAR GHAT, DASASVAMEDH GHAT..etc, The most important Ghats are Harischandra Ghat, Hanuman Ghat, and Mani Karni ka Ghat. There will be at least one dead body which will be burning on a Ghat. During my stay, I have noticed at least 10 or 15 dead bodies being carried away to the HANUMAN GHAT. This is the Ghat which is preferred by a Common middle class and poor people. They charge some reasonable amount depending upon the financial position of the person. In the case of Mani Karni ka Ghat, the charges to burn the dead body will be very high. They collect some thousands of rupees to burn the dead body. Similarly, another costly Ghat is Harischandra Ghat. I engaged a boat to visit all the Ghat from the river I could capture the beautiful sceneries as well as some dead bodies which were on the funeral pyre. If one sees the entire view one will realize the impermanence of life. The bodies will be burning and some bodies will be thrown into the water and some will be flown and some made into ashes and mixed in the sacred river water. They all tell us how insignificant the life of a human being is. The river Ganges might have seen many generations and their generations coming as dead bodies being burnt on its bank. This is the philosophy of life. There are people who deliberately come and stay in Varanasi to give a meaningful end to their life. They take a room and spend their life waiting for their turn of death.
