Mountain is merely a rock and roll footnote despite still performing albeit with numerous lineup changes and down periods. The band’s first two albums charted well in 1970 and 1971 and it was downhill after that. From their debut album “Climbing!.” “Mississippi Queen” would become Mountain’s only hit and signature song charting at Billboard #21. I grew up with “Mississippi Queen” first when it was a hit and later as a classic rock staple. Though never becoming major, Mountain is credited as a pioneer in hard rock/heavy metal and you can hear that in “Mississippi Queen.” Outside of Led Zep, few bands rocked as hard in 1970 as Mountain who were a no frills outfit. Leslie West’s voice is rough as he bellows “Mississippi queen, you know what I mean” and there is a blues influence. The song is not for the easy listening crowd.

Leslie West, Felix Pappalardi & Corky Laing - Mountain perform Mississippi Queen live at the Randall's Island N.Y. Pop Festival 1970. From the movie "The Day...

impressive no nonsense rock - the Randall's Island Festival looks like a postscript to Woodstock

'Never becoming major'?
I wouldn't quite say that. Maybe not Zeppelin or Sabbath or Purple, but they were pretty danged popular.
I've got their first three studio albums (although the third is actually half & half, one side studio, one live) and used to have the 4th, I need to get it again.
I bought Leslie's solo 2013 release 'Still Climbing' last year...not a bad track on it.
There's a slight debate some fans have with what the first 'Mountain' album really is, since Leslie's first album was called 'Mountain' and Pappalardi played on it, but the official discography lists 'Climbing'.

@JohnRoberts I think that would depend on what household you were in, because the people I ran with back then all listened to them.
Sure...not popular like Hendrix or The Doors or the Stones, but still I would consider them a major act.
I know people that would kill for West's guitar tone.

They never sold a zillion albums and never became a household name. Mountain wasn't headlining Madison Square. There's popular and then's there's Zep popular. That's not to detract from their quality.

It's somewhat catchy but terribly simplistic. Have you heard the Ozzy Osbourne remake of it?

This was the only song I could play on the guitar on Rock Band. You're right, this is a rocking tune.
